Cooking In Summer, Make It Easy And Enjoyable

I really like the summer when weather is hot and sunny. I would prefer if it wasn’t as hot as it is right now, but still good weather makes my mood better. The only thing is that because the weather is so good, I really don’t like to spend too much time cooking or staying in the hot kitchen. Do you think the same?

Tips what to do

  1. One of the things I very often do during the summer, when the evenings are long and I like spending as much time as possible with my family, is to serve small portions of quickly made meals, almost like nibbles.

Firstly, nobody at home has a great appetite when it is too hot. And secondly, who wants to cook complicated dishes when you can eat something everyone will enjoy, cooked in minutes? That is my excuse.

I am not saying that you should only serve cold dishes. No, you can still enjoy hot dishes, but opt for the simplest recipes with your favourite ingredients. Check out my blog for ideas.

2. The other thing I do to avoid staying in the kitchen for too long is using my multi cooker regularly. As a whole, I use this appliance quite often, but it is my best friend during the summer. I especially love it when I toss all the ingredients in and select the program, then all I have to do is gather my people around the table (which is not an easy job when the weather is perfect) and we can all enjoy a delicious meal together. It doesn’t have to be at a specific time, just when everyone at home is ready to eat, as the multi cooker would keep the food warm until you need it.

I, personally, use a multi cooker when I am using an appliance to help me cook the meals, click here to see my multi cooker.

I like the multi cooker. It’s an appliance that is easy to use, but it can help you prepare numerous extremely delicious meals without you spending too much time in the kitchen. Prepare breakfasts, lunches and dinners just in time to enjoy them with the people you love.

Of course, you can use other appliances that you find helpful, depending on the eating habits of your family – your rice cooker or slow cooker. They both prepare yummy meals and also don’t need you constantly paying attention to what’s cooking.

  1. Eat more fruit and vegetables, especially those that do not require heat treatment/cooking

I love salads, but let’s be honest – it is easier to eat a fresh salad when the weather is nice and it is not so cold. A good nutritional salad would be a good meal at the end of the day to fill you up with energy, vitamins and minerals.

If you would like to make it even more yummy and completely substitute the main meal, throw some grilled/roasted chicken, some rice or pasta in, serve the main and side dish together – click here to see one of my favourite meaty salads.

  1. If you really don’t feel like cooking tonight, make a smoothie. It doesn’t matter what your reason for preparing one is – because you are too tired, because you don’t want to waste too much time cutting ingredients and cooking them, because you are too lazy to even chew the food (my older kid’s excuse) or it is just too yummy to have one from time to time.

Instead of cooking, make a fruity or vegetable smoothie for dinner. That way the meal would be packed with nutrients your body can enjoy, you can have a delicious meal (especially when you add different seasoning) and the best part – all you need to do is put all the ingredients in the blender. As easy as that.

  1. And lastly, if you are too hot to stay inside and cook, just go outside. Plan a fun day, have a BBQ or a picnic at the park

My husband would love to have a BBQ at any time of the year, he is willing to stay outside and cook at the bbq no matter what the weather is like – hot or cold, just to enjoy the delicious flavours of cooked meat and vegetables. I also like when he decides he is willing to fire the bbq. It means all of us would be outside and the meal would be so scrumptious that almost nobody would find what to complaint about.

I should say that I really like taking my family for a picnic as well – to the park, at the beach or in the back yard. I usually prepare some hot dogs and/or sandwiches and grab roughly chopped vegetables (peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, red onion) to go as a salad and we are good to go.

Having a Lighter Meal – PROs and CONs

It may be just me and my family that we enjoy having not too heavy to digest meals when the weather is hot, but I think it is a good thing to do anyway – have more nutritional, even healthy food that would make you feel good and more energetic.

PROs:

  • nutrients from vegetables and fruit would keep you feeling full for longer than if you just have one piece of chocolate cake

  • eating fresh food, drinking more liquid, especially water, to keep you hydrated, receiving different vitamins and minerals from the food is beneficial for your health and the way you feel

  • teaching yourself to eat less might change your eating habits and help you be more healthy

CONs:

  • even though you might not be as hungry as when the weather is bad and cold, you still might need more food to feel satisfied, especially if your body’s used to receiving more food

Conclusion: Enjoy The Good Weather, Eat Well

I love to eat, I admit that. But even I eat less when the weather is good, sunny and hot. During those months traditionally we have access to many different fruit and vegetables in season and it would be a shame if we don’t use that time to do something nice for ourselves.

My advice is – eat the things you like to eat, but have lighter portions and increase the healthy ingredients in your meals. That way you will have the energy to enjoy the beautiful weather to the fullest.
