COOKING WITH KIDS – MAKE THE WEEKENDS YUMMY AND FUN

I love cooking and especially baking (biscuits and cakes) with my children. When I prepare the tools needed for this, they immediately are ready to help.

I don’t know if they just enjoy mixing ingredients (and creating mess :-)) or they just can’t wait to tuck into the result later, but everyone at home is very happy to land a hand – in preparation and in eating as well.

And because winter days are long and dark and days in the summer are exceptionally special if you serve a treat – I am suggesting you to spend one day with your kids in the kitchen, mixing and preparing your favourite sweet desserts.

NON-SKID MIXING BOWLS PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION – PROs & CONs

When baking with kids, especially younger ones, you should always be prepared – for the mess, for the uneven mixing of ingredients, for the spills and their desire to start something else before finishing what they are doing right now.

But, if you have tried this before, you will know that the results are well worth it – the kids are happy, they feel they’ve accomplished something and, when the sweet treats come out of the oven, they just love to taste them.

That is why your job as a parent or carer is to be as prepared as possible and use equipment that is easy for the little hands and is safe for them.

PROs

CONs

It doesn’t skid over the plot (because of its silicon base)

It costs more than the usual bowls

It’s easy for the children to use it

It might take some space for storing (like every other bowl you have)

Your home stays cleaner

It’s very easy to clean – just wash it with warm soap water

Note! I prefer to use those mixing bowls made from metal or glass (instead of plastic), just for hygienic reasons and personal taste.

COOKING EQUIPMENT PRODUCTS DESCRIPTION

Everyone who is planning on preparing a cake, bread, biscuits, cupcakes or muffins even once in their life knows how important precise measuring of ingredients is. Because when you deviate from the recipe the results can be really unpleasant and even inedible.

Owning a good set of measuring cups and spoons would help you not to waste too much time on this element of baking, but to focus on the fun part – mixing the ingredients, cooking them and making the food beautiful.

Measuring spoons usually show measures in tablespoons and teaspoons, and the measuring bowls can be both in metric, and imperial units.

  1. Little Chefs Aprons

Product: Spoilt Rotten Children’s Personalised Baking & Cooking Apron Apron

Price: £8.99

Place to buy: Amazon.co.uk

My rating: 7.5/10

APPAREL PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Every little chef needs to have the appropriate apparel that would make them feel in tone with what they are going to do.

These nicely coloured aprons can even be personalised – write your little one’s name or favourite wording and they would love to bake with you.

I like the colours as well, they also set the desired mood for cooking.

YOU CAN USE THESE UTENSILS TO PREPARE EVERY TREAT YOU NEED FOR EVERY SPECIAL OCCASSION DURING THE YEAR, TOGETHER WITH YOUR LITTLE ONES

If you want to include your children when preparing your food – sweet or savoury, just give them those non-skid bowls and stir the ingredients together. They would love to be involved!

I sometimes organize a cake baking activity for the lazy winter or sunny summer Sundays, when everyone likes to be treated.

Use these utensils and, I believe, your little ones would appreciate food more – when you put some hard work in preparing it, you won’t dismiss it easily 😛

I use these non-skid bowls even without any children around, because they make the stirring and folding ingredients very easy as they never slide under your arms. So, you can be sure that the only thing you need to think about is what to put in the bowl, how to stir it and not to be too careful to follow the bowl around the plot.

This is what my children and I made using our non-skid mixing bowls and measuring cups. This is a recipe my grandma used to make back in time, but I also used a recipe I found on Bon Apetit web-site.

Easy Chocolate Cake Easy cake

Ingredients:

  • 3-4 eggs

  • 250gr sugar

  • 1 cup plain yoghurt

  • 150ml oil

  • 300gr flour

  • 1tsp bicarbonate of soda

  • 1tbsp baking powder

  • 1tbsp cocoa powder

Preparation:

  1. Beat the eggs together with the sugar, you can use the electric mixer on low speed

  2. Put the bicarbonate of soda in the yoghurt and together with the oil add them to the egg mixture

  3. Mix the flour with the baking powder and, spoon by spoon, add them to the mixture as well. Mix well until everything is well incorporated

  4. Have a cake mould ready and pour the mixture in it. Leave a little bit of the mixture and add the cocoa powder to it, then pour it over the other cake mixture and stir them to form patterns from the different-coloured pastry

  5. Bake for 40-50 minutes at 180°C

Before serving I sliced the cake and covered with with some ready-made chocolate topping

I LOVE BAKING WITH MY CHILDREN

I’ve always had a sweet tooth and I also love baking. So, preparing cakes, biscuits or muffins I have always found it to be even therapeutic for me. I love adding the different ingredients and mixing them to form a sweet pastry and then, after cooking it, you have delicious and beautiful desserts that make you really smile and enjoy eating them.

Although I am very careful what I give my children to eat, I believe that you shouldn’t limit and restrict them from tasting something. I believe in moderation – teach them to eat a slice of cake or a piece of chocolate, not have the whole of it at one go.

Because of that and because I would love my children to enjoy cooking, I involve them regularly when I prepare food. It doesn’t need to be only baking sweet treats, involve them in preparation of your regular dinner and they would enjoy it more, because they put some effort in it.

And I think that baking with my kids could be really fun (although messy as well) and when everyone is having a good time, then it is a day well spent.

Try these products that every household should have and you would start searching for other recipes the whole family could make together.

I hope you enjoyed my review and if you have any questions or a suggestion, please get in touch with me or leave a comment below.

Have a yummy and fun day!

I like your page! i like that you recommend a lot of equipment, like bowls, etc… I prefer not to use plastic ones either. I like that you always have pictures about what you’re writing. Is cooking with your kids takes a long time? From what age are your kids are cooking with you? I think we will try it if our kids will be old enough.

Thank you for your comments. I should admit that cooking with kids is never easy and fast, but if you are prepared for the mess, it could be great fun, especially for the little ones.

I started asking my eldest to stir the ingredients for a cake when he was maybe just over 1,5 years old. Of course, he needed help and guidance, but the result being yummy was always a winner.

Now, my son is just over 3 years old and he loves cooking – being it using his toys or helping me stir while preparing something.

I hope your family have fun trying it. All the bes

    Hi Ellie,

We also love baking with our children. Some fun recipe for easy chocolate cake here and I know the kids would love having their own apron.

We usually let the kids stir and crack the egg in and measure out flower. Things like that. They are young still and love just helping in any way!

    Cheers,

    Marcel

      Hi, Marcel

I agree with what you say – if kids are still young you give them easy tasks, the important thing is just to involve them.

I’ve noticedbthat they just love to be helpful and when they are taking part in preparing the food, they feel very happy.

Keep enjoying your the time with your children. Cheers
