Croissants and Custard Bread and Butter Pudding – Easy and Extra Scrumptious Take On The Classic Dessert

My little ones usually like eating croissants – be it with jam or baked with cheese and ham. But last week, the pack of croissants I had prepared for them to enjoy was left in the back of the fridge and the croissants started getting tough to eat and not as delicious as they were when fresh. I was thinking what I can do with this buttery, flaky pastry, when I noticed that we still had a can of ready-made custard and I decided to make a very easy to prepare, loved by everyone at home, suitable for the whole family and very delicious breakfast or dessert – Croissants and Custard Bread and Butter Pudding.

This recipe is very quick to prepare, just needs some time to absorb the flavours, so you could make the preparation in the evening and just bake it in the morning to have a tempting warm breakfast.

I also like the bread and butter pudding served as a dessert with some thick cream, but it would be your choice.

Try this recipe yourself.

Ingredients (4 servings):

  • 5-6 croissants

  • 1 can of ready-made custard

  • 150ml (thick) double cream (optional)
  • butter to spread

  • 20-30gr raisins

  1. Slice the croissants through the middle lengthwise and spread some butter. Scatter raising in the cavity

  2. Mix the double cream and custrad, arrange the prepared croissants in a baking tray and pour the custard, distribute it evenly to cover all croissants

  3. Leave the dessert to stand for 20 minutes or even overnight in the fridge to absorb the flavours and liquid

  4. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200°C for 30-40 minutes

I served it with fresh fruit.

If you like to make the custard yourself and not use a tinned, ready-made one, see the recipe below (a recipe from the BBC Food web-site) I use to prepare the custard at home.

You’ll need:

  • 4 egg yolks

  • 100gr caster sugar

  • 300ml double cream

  • 300ml milk

  • 1tsp vanilla paste/extract

  1. In a bowl, whisk the yolks together with the sugar until it gets pale in colour

  2. Put the cream and milk in a saucepan, add the vanilla, heat until it almost boils, remove from the hot-plate

  3. Whisking all the time, pour the milk mixture to the egg and sugar one

  4. Transfer the custard to a clean saucepan and over a low heat, stir constantly until it gets thick

Note! You can add 1tsp cornflour to the egg and sugar mixture so that to help the custard get thick. Always be aware that you should stir constantly the custard mixture so that not to burn anything and get some black parts in your cream.

I hope you enjoy this delicious classic dessert that we made by adding those very yummy croissants and custard. Croissants act as the bread and the custard makes the pudding creamy and succulent.

I would love to hear how you prepare this pudding or any other classic dessert. Get in touch with me by leaving a comment below.

    Interesting idea Elle!
I hate the idea of wasting food and I love custard and bread and butter pudding, so this is an awesome idea.
Whether I would eat this for breakfast or save it as a dessert is another thing to consider.
I like the article, it is very informative and the guide is easy-to-follow.
