St. Valentine’s Day is the day when you want to think of something romantic to show the people in your life that you love them.

Today I am going to share with you an idea I found several years ago how to travel to a place you cherish or is associated with love in a cheap way and even without leaving your home.

A few years ago I was thinking how to organize something that my husband had never experienced before, but because we had recently became parent and the time and money were scarce, I needed something that would not cost much and would be easy to make.

And I decided to take my husband to Italy.

So, travel with us or find your favourite place in the world:

What you would need:

  • print paper (you can use colour paper for added festivity)

  • envelope

What to do:

  1. Create a First Class airplane ticket

I used the following site to generate the plane tickets (fake, of course) I needed for the evening –

Plane ticket

  1. Make a card and put it in an envelope

Make a card or letter, explaining the things that would happen tonight and, together with the plane ticket, put them in an envelope that you would give your loved one/s.

Don’t forget to mention the following:

  • that is a romantic experience

  • the ticket is not real

  • the place where you are meeting (your house)

  • the time of the date

  1. Decorate your home

Decorate your home in accordance with the theme chosen.

I decided to take my husband to Italy and specifically Rome.

That is why I found pictures of places we instinctively associate with the city and printed them out. I decorated our open plan living room with the pictures and I stuck them to the cupboards.

Note! You can choose any city you like in the world – Paris, New York, Geneva, Honk Kong, Sydney, etc.

  1. Prepare the meal

I suggest you prepare a themed meal – a dish that is typical for the country you are going tonight.

  1. Enjoy your special time

Below see my suggestion for an Italian-inspired pasta dish you can serve this 14th February.

Tagliatelle with Mushrooms

Source: Pasta&Co Spaghetti, Ravioli, Lasagna and More book

Ingredients (for 2 servings):

  • 250gr chestnut mushrooms

  • 60gr butter, softened

  • seasoning – oregano, basil, red pepper, marjoram, thyme, rosemary, sage, parsley

I used an italian seasoning pack

  • 1litre mushroom broth (you can use mushroom-flavoured stock cubes to make the broth)

  • 200gr tagliatelle

You can use mushroom-flavoured tagliatelle instead (sold in special food stores)

  • ½ cup chopped nuts – almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts

Preparation in 5-easy steps:

  1. Prepare the herb butter:image

  • spread the butter on a parchment paper, aiming to achieve a thin layer

  • sprinkle the herbs

  • roll the paper and leave in the fridge

  1. Prepare the mushrooms:image

  • wash them, slice them and sauté in a knob of butter – you would need about 10minutes to get them ready

  1. Put the broth in a pot and boil it, add the tagliatelle and prepare in accordance with the packet instructions

  2. Get the butter roll from the fridge and cut it into little pieces

  3. When ready, drain the pasta, plate it, add pieces of herb butter and the mushrooms. Sprinkle with chopped nuts

Enjoy with your favourite wine!

I just loved the idea. I have a plan for this year Valentine’s day but oh boy next year this is going to rock my St. Valentine’s day. I don’t even call it cheap, it’s full of creativity. it’s more romantic and unforgettable than any other regular valentine’s day celeberation. I also like Italy but think we will go to Hawaii, and she loves seafood. what do suggest me to cook for her?

Thank you. I love your idea – to visit Hawaii. I love the sun and sea, but unfortunately I have never been there.
I don’t know any typical dish from Hawaii, but I think you can never go wrong with fish and seafood – try any prawn dish or tapenade-topped baked white fish. They are easy to do and are really yummy.
Check my fish recipe as well 🙂
Share what your idea for this St. Valentine’s Day is (if it is not too personal), because I still haven’t decided on anything.
      Have a great day!
